1) On the number line below, a point between points R and S will be selected at random. What is the probability that the point selected will be within 2 units of the point with coordinate 8?
R S
?----------------------------------------------------------?
-6 14

Re: Data Analysis

assume the line is 614 units
within 2 units of 8 is between 6 and 10 a total of 4 units
then 4/614 points satisfy us

Would you please rework this problem????

The problem is "a number line which begins at -6(Point R) and ends at +14(Point S)" . . . on this number line, a point between points R and S will be selected at random. What is the probability that the point selected will be within 2 units of the point with coordinate 8?

This wasn't the correct answer.

The distance between points R and S with coordinates of -6 and +14 is | 14 - (-6) |, or 20 units.

Points within 2 units of 8 must lie between 6 and 10 on the number line; the distance between points with coordinates 6 and 10 is | 10 - 6 | or 4 units. Any point we chose between the coordinates 6 and 10 must lie within 2 units of the point whose coordinate is 8.

The probability that a randomly-chosen point on segment RS is within 2 units of the point with coordinate 8 is 4/20, or 1/5.

I saw that the problem was written incorrectly (at least the graph was) so therefore it couldn't be the correct answer . . . I wasn't bullying . . . just asking someone to rework the problem since it's a study question from the Praxis. . . I wish I said things in as few words as you do!!!
Same as: a number from 1 to 20 is picked at random:
what is the probability that the number is lesser than 5?
"See" that?

what is the probability that the number is \(\displaystyle > > \) lesser \(\displaystyle < < \) than 5?

I realize that the word "less" was intended here, as in "the number is less than."

**Edit**

You are welcome, and I take back my presumption
about what word you intended.
