Did you draw a diagram? Here's part of the diagram, showing the pole and ONE of the cables:

Code:
            *
            *
24 ft       *
top         *\
to          * \
bottom      *  \x
            *   \
            * __\
             5 ft

The wire is attached at the MIDPOINT of the pole. So, if the pole is 24 feet tall, the wire is attached at a point 12 feet from the ground. Do you see a right triangle there? The length of the wire is x, and that's the hypotenuse. The two legs are 12 feet and 5 feet. Use the Pythagorean theorem to find the length marked x...and then remember that there are THREE wires, each with this length, and the question asks for the total length of the wires.

Multiple Choice 7

The answer that we have are

a. 72 ft.
b. 39 ft.
c. 63 ft
d 78 ft

I do understand how you worked the problem but 5 ft is not one of my multiple choice answers.

Please re-read what I said in my earlier post.

You have a right triangle.

One leg is 12 feet.
One leg is 5 feet.
The hypotenuse is x...and that is the length of ONE wire.

The Pythagorean Theorem says that in a right triangle,
leg2 + leg2 = hypotenuse2

So,
122 + 52 = x2

Use THAT to find the value of x...which is the length of ONE wire. But there are THREE wires. So you'll need to multiply the value of x by 3, and then look at the answer choices. The correct one is among them.
