Event B happened after event A and before event C. The elapsed time between A and event C was 10^9 seconds, and the elapsed time between event B and event C was 10^3 seconds. What is the closest to the elapsed time, in seconds, between event A & event B?

Re: Measurement

let the time between A and B be x
time between B and C = 10^3
time between A and C= 10^9
T= time between A and C - time between B and C
T=10^9- 10^3
T= 1,000,000,000 - 1,000
T= 999,999,000
T= 9.99999 x 10^8

Re: Measurement

The answer is suppose to be 10^ 9. I don't get this by your solution.

Re: Measurement

10[sup:2lojo6xv]9[/sup:2lojo6xv], or 1,000,000,000 has just ONE significant figure.
10[sup:2lojo6xv]3[/sup:2lojo6xv], or 1,000, has just ONE significant figure.

So, the "answer" should have just ONE significant figure as well.

9.999999 rounded to ONE significant figure is 10.

10 * 10[sup:2lojo6xv]8[/sup:2lojo6xv] = 10[sup:2lojo6xv]9[/sup:2lojo6xv]
