In your geometry textbook you will find some extremely important things which are NOT there just to take up space.
Some of these "things" are called definitions, and some are called postulates (or maybe axioms, depending on your text). Definitions and postulates are ASSUMED to be true ALL OF THE TIME.
You will eventually see things called theorems, which you prove to be true based upon the definitions, postulates, and theorems which have already been proved.
So....please EXAMINE the postulates (or axioms) your book has covered so far. I say this, because the question you've asked here directly relates to one of the postulates.
