A total of 40 dollars is to be divided between Abbott and Costello, with Costello to receive 12 dollars more than Abbott. How much will each receive?

Solution:

Costello = 12 + x
Abbott = x

x + x + 12 = 40

2x + 12 = 40

2x = 40 - 12

2x = 28

x = 28 ÷ 2

x = 14

Abbott will receive 14 dollars.

Costello will receive 12 more than Abbott for a sum of 26 dollars.

PROVE:

Abbott + Costello = 40

14 + 26 = 40

40 = 40...It checks to be true.

What do you say?

Yes! You've checked it for yourself - well done. You need to be a bit more confident with your answers.
