Does my friend owe money? My friend paid her parents 80£ in rent. Then...

This is my problem and none of my friends can agree on an answer so here it is.

My friend paid her parents 80£ in rent. They then went for a meal and she had to borrow 40£ from her parents. She then paid her parents back the money she owes them for the meal 40£. My question is does she still owe them another 40£. I'm confused because she says if she pays them anymore money she says she will have paid 160£, I say however that 40£ of that was given back to her by her parents so she does owe them more. Sorry if it's confusing

Before your girlfriend went to dinner, she only owed her parents 80£.

She paid that 80£, so she owned them nothing. Then, they went to dinner.

At dinner, she borrowed 40£, so she only owed 40£.

Your girlfriend is correct, when she says that paying another 40£ would result in paying 160£ total.

80 (her rent) + 40 (her dinner) + 40 (your claim) = 160 total

Sounds like she had a nice dinner.
