hi can some one help me kay let me tell u my story i just moved and at my old school biology and world histroy were freshman courses here they're sophmore courses so my counsler kept me in the same classes so i wouldnt get confused now the thing is that next year im suppose to go back to freshman year to take the classes i missed witch is 2 and i said no i wanna go up not down!! so if i get A in biology and algebra I i go to junior stuff like chemesrty but i need to take 2 math courses geomerty AND algebra II cuz im suppose to have a strong background 4 chemistry im scared cuz im not really super smart in math :cry:

ok now here's my math problem [/i]solving inequalities by mutiplication and division im gonna give ya'll the problem and the way i did tell me please what i did wrong and step by step thanx!!!! oh and stuff like 5/6 or x/3 etc. are fractions lol i dont know how to do it any other way and the letter "t" is the plus sign :lol:

1) -a/5<-14 in other words negative A over five is less then - 14
2) -1/5<-14 i rewrote it cause since A has an invisible 1 in front of it so yea thats where i got 1 from just so thought u's should know
3)-1/5<-14 i added 1/5 to one so side and so i had to do it to the other
t 1/5 t 1/5 this is where i think im doing it wrong
A< 13 4/5 and i got A is less than 13 and four/ fiffths

First of all, I'm sorry to hear about your problem. Similar situations have occured at previous schools of mine as well.

Second, you should have a "+" sign on your keyboard. If you can locate the button that says "<- backspace" on the right side of your keyboard, then if you hold down "shift" and press the button that should be right next to it (on the left) You should get the plus sign.

Thirdly, these problems are fairly easy and since you are eager to figure out how to do this, I am confident that you won't have a problem grasping the concept.
. . .
Let's take your first problem : \(\displaystyle \L{}\frac{-a}{5}< -14\)
. . .
You start out solving these problems the same way you would solve them if they had an "=" sign instead of a "<" sign. You multiply each side by 5 to get rid of the 5 on the left side.
. . .
\(\displaystyle \L{}-a<(-14)(5)\); \(\displaystyle \L{}-a<-70\)
. . .
Now, here's where things differ from equalities. You would normally just divide each side my -1 to get rid of both signs. However, you don't stop there. In inequalities, whenever you divide or multiply each side by a negative number, you HAVE to remember to FLIP the sign. For example:
. . .
\(\displaystyle \L{}a>70\)
. . .
It's that simple! Now I wanna see if you can do the next one. If you still don't get it, I can do another one or give you more helpful information. All ya' have to do is ask ;)!
. . .
EDIT: You could also listen to Denis. He knows what he's talking about.

EDIT #2: For some reason, my coding is getting messed up, so part of the problem is obviously incorrect. However, if you just follow what I've explained, you will be fine.

EDIT #3: That should be better...and, uhm, much easier to see? lol

I suggest you also start NOW using mature English;
you (not u)
thanks (not thanx)
for (not 4)

All that I can say is if you were a good student before, you need to be a great student now. I suggest attending ALL classes, never miss a day unless it is absolutley necessary. Take copious notes!! This will help you out in the future. Also, if you have a question or problem, ask someone (preferably your teacher) right away! The sooner you take care of your problems, the less time they keep you from understanding the material. Oh, and make sure you complete ALL assignments even if it kills you. These things are very important. I mean, if you are in school every day and ask questions and do every piece of work and you still don't get it... then at least you tried. I know you can do this. Just have a little faith in yourself! :wink:

Also, correct English can only help you! lol.
