A company that manufactures hospital beds has fixed monthly costs of 189000. The average cost per bed, C, for the company to manufacture x beds per month is modeled by the formula

C = 630x + 189000
x
How many hospital bed can be manufactured per month at an average cost of 840?
How do I start this. Could someone give me an idea please.

I can't say anything specific, since I can't tell where that last "x" belongs, but in general, they've given you a formula for C and x, along with a value for C. Plug in the value for C, and solve for the value of x.

If you get stuck, please reply with a corrected version of the formula, showing all of the steps you have tried. Thank you.

The total cost formula consists of two parts: variable cost + fixed cost

In this problem, the total cost is C, the variable part is 630x, and the fixed part is 189000. Variable cost means that for each item produced, it costs $630. If you produce x items, the cost is 630x [$].

Average cost (per item) is found by taking C/x, that is, (total cost) / (number of items). So average cost is:

(630x + 189000)/x

which is said to be $840.

So you have to solve for x in:

840 = (630x + 189000)/x

I'll leave the details to you, but my answer is 900 [beds].

Hope that helps...

Steve
