the garden is to be a right triangle with a base that is twice as long as the height, but the total area must not exceed 50m^2. Find the dimensions of the garden.

i got 13.6 and 6.8, is this correct? if not why?

Well, you're in the ballpark, but you haven't said what level of accuracy your answer needs to be -- for example, how many decimal places your answer must be accurate to.

Also, you haven't shown your work, so we can't see why your answer is not quite right. Please show your work.

You know that the area of a triangle is given by A = (1/2)(base)(height), so you can check your answer. Using the numbers you've shown, we get A = 46.24 square units. Just to check your answer, have you tried using larger dimensions in order to get closer to 50? You could try 6.9 and 13.8, say, and see if that gets you closer, or if it goes over 50.

That is just a trial and error (guess and check) method however. There are methods to give accurate answers, but you haven't told us what method you are supposed to use.
