Wouldn't what "just cancel out"? You have:
. . . . .(x<sup>-1</sup> - y<sup>-1</sup>)/(x<sup>-1</sup> + y<sup>-1</sup>)
. . . . .[(1/x) - (1/y)] / [(1/x) + (1/y)]
Since the contents of the brackets don't match, their expressions can't "cancel".
