I mean, I know we work subtraction in a vertical column when doing arithmetic, but we mstly work horizontally, in algebra. Write your exercise this way: 12m^3 - 8m^2 + 6m + 7 - (5m^2 - 4) The grouping symbols are very important. They show that both 5m^2 and -4 are being subtracted. Cheers ~ Mark
