Here is my problem:
Area of a Painting:
A rectangular painting with a width of x centimeters has an area of x^2 + 50x square centimeters.
Find a binomial that represents the length.

2L+2w=area
2x+(2+x)=x^2 + 50x sq. centimeters

That is the binomial representation I come up with. But I don't know if I am right or wrong. I have a horrible time at setting up these types of problems. Can you explain?
Thanks

Find a binomial that represents the length.
The area A of a rectangle with length L and width x is given by A = xL.

You are given that A = x[sup:3j4yonzs]2[/sup:3j4yonzs] + 50x, with the width being x.

To find the length, divide the area of by the width or, which is the same thing, factor out the x:

. . . . .x[sup:3j4yonzs]2[/sup:3j4yonzs] + 50x = x(x + 50) = xL

What then is the expression for "L"?
