Hi guys

I'm stuck on a very simple maths question. A student has 3 module marks: 100% (worth 8.2% of the final grade), 72% (worth 41.8% of the final grade) and 78% (worth 50% of the final grade). What's their grade average? I'm really stuck and tearing my hair out! If anyone could help I'd appreciate it so much.

Thank you

This kind of average is called a weighted average, where each amount is multiplied by the percentage it is worth and then all these amounts are added together to get the overall average. Here is an example. See if you follow then apply it to your problem.

A recent study shows that on the radio 40% of the songs played are 3 minutes long, 35% are 4 minutes long and 25% are 5 minutes long. What is the average length of a song?

3(0.40) + 4(0.35) + 5(0.25) = 3.85 minutes.

Got it?
