A spy is running from his captors in a forest that is 8 3/4 miles long and 41/3 miles wide...find the area of the forest where he is hiding hint the area of rectangle is the product of length times the width.

32+2/4 35/4 x 12+1 =13/3 35/4 x 13/3 = 455/12..wrong please help I have this wrong..I know the right answer but I am working it wrong

Convert 455/12 into a "mixed fraction" (in the form that the data was given to you). May be that will work

I just was so tried last night I thought I had it wrong .. thanks for letting have a panic attack and not kicking me in the butt:eek:

32+2/4 35/4 x 12+1 =13/3 35/4 x 13/3 = 455/12

It is difficult for me to interpret the line above.

 In the future, please type each of your steps on a separate line.

\(\displaystyle \frac{35}{4}\) is the improper-fraction form of the mixed number \(\displaystyle 8\frac{3}{4}\)

\(\displaystyle \frac{41}{3}\) is the improper-fraction form of the mixed number \(\displaystyle 13\frac{2}{3}\)

In general, we don't do arithmetic with mixed numbers; we use improper fractions, instead.

The area of the rectangle is calculated by multiplying \(\displaystyle \frac{35}{4} \times \frac{41}{3}\)

Is this what you eventually did?
