Variation in answers when doing Trig

Let me pose the problem first.
I have a right triangle with a 40 angle with leg length of 7 and hypotenuse length of 10.

If calculate Tan40=7/y
y=8.3

If I use Sin50=y/10
y=7.6

If I use the Pythagorean Theorem I get 7.1

I don't understand the large variation in answers. Is this an acceptable variation in answers?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Is [the large variation] acceptable
Hi BeardedTorus. No, those variations indicate an error. From where did you get this triangle and its measurements?

One or more angles and/or one or more side lengths are not correct.

For example, the cosine of 50 degrees is not 7/10, however the cosine of 45.5729 degrees (rounded) is.

This was a problem on a worksheet I had, and was confused. However; your explanation clears up my misunderstanding.

Thank you!
