Draw a line L, and mark two points on the line at least an inch apart. Label the points R and T. In your own words, explain how to use a compass to copy segment RT. The compass can be a commercial compass, or one you create yourself with a pencil and a string. Pretend you are explaining the steps to someone who doesn't know how to use a compass.
Lastly, explain how you can compare the lengths of segment RT and the new line segment you have drawn, using another measuring tool

Please share your work with us, indicating exactly where you are stuck - so that we may know where to begin to help you.

All this means is that you are supposed to first draw a line segment, from Point R to Point T. It can be any length. Next, make an exact copy of that line segment somewhere else on your paper using only a compass (not a ruler). This is a "construction" exercise. In other words, if you are given a line segment to begin with, how would you use a compass to create an exact copy (meaning same length).

I hope that they mean "compass and straightedge".

I mean, the compass alone enables one to draw two points that are the same distance apart as points R and T, but you need a straightedge to draw a straight line-segment from one point to the other.

A straightedge is like a ruler with no markings on it.

Cimmeron802, have you used a compass before? I mean, do you know what a compass is?
