A company packages DVD collections in rectangulnar cases 20 cm high, 2 cm thick and 600 cm cubed in volume. The cases are then packed into boxes for shipping.

what would the dimensions be for a box that would hold the 10 DVDs that are packed tightly? What size could another box be?

i know it is important to figure out the dimensions of one dvd

this is is what I did

20cm by 2cm by 15 cm = 600 cm cubed.

the missing side is 15 cm

there are 10 DVDs so 10 times 600 is 6000 cm cubed. So the box I need to design needs to
have a volume of 6000 cm cubed.

i know I have to look at the dimensions of the ten DVDs but I just can't understand how to do that. I think I need a diagram so I can visualize the end result. I really don't care if you tell me the answer I am more interested in learning the process of how to do it as I have several questions very similar to this.

oh I just figured out one box could be 20 by 20 by 15, but for the life of me I can't figure how to make another another box. I do have the answer as that was given to me but I don't understand how they were able to decide to make the box this size. The other box is 40 by 10 by 15. If someone could explain the how and why of the box that size that would be great

Think of stacking the DVD's and then 'building' a box around them.

Do you want a single stack with the DVD's flat? If so then the base of the box needs to be 20cm X 15cm inside dimension [ID]. Ten DVD's in the box then how high would it be?

How about two stacks? Which way 40cm X 15cm or 20cm X 30cm? How many high then?

How about ...
