I was wondering if someone could help me understand how to solve problem 37.

We need to see your work to see where you are stuck.

Basically, what you have to understand is that a line intersecting two parallel lines does so at the same angle. You should be able to find two equations in two unknowns.

These are the things I know from looking at the picture.

• (7x + 9) + z = 180
• (7y - 4) + z = 180
• The consecutive interior angles are congruent

I still do not understand how to set up an equation to find the variables based on that information, and am not aware if I am missing crucial knowledge for solving the problem.
