definition

I am studying about Vertical Angles. I can not remember the definition of the term "Substitution." In my problem I have Vertical angles with the Staatement that Angle 1 is equal to Angle 3. The Reason for the statement is "Substitution." I could use a definition or Esplanation. Pete

"Substitution" is the act of replacing one element by another element that is equal to the original element. For instance...

1) A = 5
2) B = A
3) Therefore B=5. We just picked up the B in line 2 and put it in place of the A in line 1 to get the result in line 3.
