Exclusions

I just learned about exclusions and I am a little lost. For example:

How do you find the exclusion of 1/(x+1)(x+y)

X does not equal _____

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm familiar with "exclusion" in the context of sets. In this context, might it mean "values not in the domain"...? If so, think: Can you divide by zero?

-1 : -1 + 1 = 0
-(y) : -y + y = 0
Both will create a division by 0

All my lesson told me about exclusions is that it is a value of a variable in a denominator that would make the denominator equal to zero. It did not go into detail too much.
