Hey guys,

I am tripping on this one and I reeeeeeally need your help.

Basically I would like to find out what some data mean in percentage terms. An exams gives your overall result as a percentage but it doesn't give the breakdown of the subject. In fact, there is a scale and results falls between the bands; it only says exceptional, good, borderline and weak.

Can anyone help me ? I tried to work on an Excel file, dividing the bands in 15, ie 100 (max), 85 (exceptional), 70 (good), 55 (borderline) and 40 (weak). Dividing the marks within each band so that there are five in each. Example 100 (max), 97, 94, 91, 88, 85 (borderline). However, it doesn't add up to the final result.

Perhaps it's really simple, but I can get my head around it.

Thanks heaps!

The real examples are here:

--> Final result as you can see was 65/100

b)

--> Final result 68/100

There is no way to know for sure - and

why do you want to know?

If I assign 76, 74, 59, 59 and 58 for Listening, Understanding, Reading, etc. - I get an average of 65.2.

Close enough!!!

Please share your work with us,indicating exactly where you are stuck - so that we may know where to begin to help you.

Subhotosh Khan:

Thanks heaps for your answer Subhotosh Khan! Why do you say that there is no way to knowing for sure ? Also, would your math for example 2 as well ?

Denis:

Why are you saying that the two links are not helpful ? They are real examples and they are the only way to figure out the numbers, I assume.

If anyone can help me pleeeeeeease let me know

Also, how about if the five bands instead of being equal are logarithmic as suggested in the paper.
Ie:

Top-Exceptional 80-100
Exceptional-Good 75-79
Good-Borderline 60-74
Borderline-Weak 55-59
Weak-Below 0-54

Hey Jeff, you are right, my apologies.
All five papers carry the same weight. Each of them is worth 20% of the overall exam.
I suspect that every band is divided in four levels, except for the exceptional and above level which I think only has two levels.

After having look at different results I think the breakdown is something like this.

Any further thoughts or questions ?
295100
18894
Exceptional
48587
38284
27981
17678
Good

Borderline
