PLEASE Help Me Understand  ! If AB = 5y - 4, BD = 7y + 3 and AD = 20y - 9, find the value of y

I assume that those are collinear points and B is between A & D.

If a point (like B) is BETWEEN two points, like A and D, the distance from A to B PLUS the distance from B to D is equal to the total distance AD.

A...........B..................D

A, B, and D are collinear points, and B is between A and D. In this type of situation,

AB + BD = AD

Since you are given expressions for AB, BD and AD, substitute those expressions into the above statement, and solve the resulting equation for y.
