Help with solving trigonometric equations!!!!

for example, cos2X=-1/2

What would you do first with the 2? Help greatly appreciated!
 
Please clarify. Do you mean:

. . . . .cos<sup>2</sup>(x) = -1/2

...or:

. . . . .cos(2x) = -1/2

...or something else? (The solution approach will depend to some extent on the actual form of the equation.)

Wait until you have your solutions for 2x (in a particular interval), then finally divide by 2 to get x=..., .., etc.

When is cos(ß) equal to -1/2?

Find all the values of ß, for 0 < ß < 4pi, for which cos(ß) = -1/2. Then replace "ß" with "2x", set "2x" equal to your list, and divide through by 2. This will give you all the solutions between 0 and 2pi.
