help with word problems

ok so it says :

Leo has $4.80 in dimes and quarters. He has 6 more dimes than quarters. How many quarters does he have?

we have to put it in a chart and thats the part i dont get.

1 quarter + 7 dimes = 0.25+0.70 = 0.95
2 quarter + 8 dimes = 0.50+0.80 = 1.35 -- Hey, it went up 35¢
3 quarter + 9 dimes = 0.75+0.90 = 1.70 -- Hey, it went up 35¢ again!

It's starting to look like a chart, isn't it?

I suppose you could put this in a chart.....

Let q = number of quarters
Value of "q" quarters, at 25 cents each, is 25q

We know that there are 6 more dimes than quarters, so
Let q + 6 = number of dimes.
Values of (q + 6) dimes, at 10 cents each, is 10(q + 6)

We know that the total value of all of the coins is $4.80, or 480 cents.

So,
25q + 10(q + 6) = 480

Ok....you solve it now. Remember that q is the number of quarters, and that you also need to find the number of dimes (but that's EASY....it is 6 more than the number of quarters!)
