As legend has it, the king of Constantinople offered Xanadu's cousin Yittrius any reward to secure the safety of his city. This Yittrius did and he requested a chessboard with one grain of rice on the first square, three grains of rice on the second square, five grains of rice on the third square and so on until the 64th square had its share of rice deposited.

a) Find the total number of grains of rice that the King needed to supply.
b) If each grain of rice weighs 0.10 gram, how many kilograms of rice does

thanks in advance...

a). This is the sum of terms in an arithmetic sequence. Your answer will be a perfect square.

The sequence of rice quantities on the squares form an arithmetic progression with a common difference of 2.

The sum of the 64 numbers is given by S = n(a + L)/2 where S = the sum, a = the first term, L = the last term and n = the number of terms..

The last term on the 64th square is L = a + (n - 1)d where d = the common difference.

As already noted, the sum will be a perfect square as the sum of any sequence of consecutive odd numbers, starting with one, will always be a perfect square number..
