There is just one reason why one number is one hundred more than another number and that reason is that the other number is one hundred less than the original number!

I'm wondering what you got, for your answer.

Here's a similar exercise.

1378 is one ten greater than what number?

In the number 1378, we see that the digit in the tens place is 7. This means that 1378 contains 7 tens:

1378 = 1000 + 300 + 70 + 8

We're told that 1378 is 1 ten greater than some other number. Well, this means that the other number must contain only 6 tens:

1000 + 300 + 60 + 8 = 1368

Therefore, 1378 is one ten greater than 1368.

If you understand this example, please try your exercise again.

If you do not understand this example, please tell us why. Cheers! :cool:

My question is this: How is one to complete the exercise by providing only a "numeral" (that is, by providing only one digit)?

Good question. I also used to think that "numeral" meant only "a digit".

The dictionary gives a broader definition: "… a figure, symbol, or group of these denoting a number" (emphasis mine). :cool:
