A \(\displaystyle 20\)-\(\displaystyle \text{mm}\)-thick steel bar with a slot (\(\displaystyle 25\)-\(\displaystyle \text{mm}\) radii at ends) is subjected to an axial load \(\displaystyle P\), as shown in the figure. What is the maximum stress for \(\displaystyle P = 180 \ \text{kN}\)? Use appendix \(\displaystyle D\) to estimate the value of the \(\displaystyle K\).

We find the maximum stress from this equation:

\(\displaystyle \frac{\sigma_{\text{max}}}{\sigma_n} = K\)
