the lateral surface of a cylinder with a diameter of 60 feet and height of 150 feet needs to be painted. find the lateral area of the cylinder to the nearest tenth.
 
Nearest 10th of what?

The lateral surface area of a cylinder is the same as the area of a rectangle whose width is the height of the cylinder and whose length is the circumference of the cylinder (imagine a "label" that covers the lateral surface of the cylinder...it would be a rectangle which "just fits" the cylinder like the label on a soup can).

So....

Lateral Area of Cylinder = height * circumference
Lateral Area of Cylinder = h * (pi*d)

Since the diameter and height are given in feet, the area will be in SQUARE FEET, and your answer should be rounded to the nearest tenth of a square foot.

(I think tkhunny gave the formula for the VOLUME of the cylinder instead)
 
Did I do that again!? Sorry, you needed Area, not Volume!
