The dimensions of a box opened at the top are 50cm, 40cm, and 23cm. Its thickness is 3cm. Find its volume.
What would be the first few steps to solve this problems?

So how do you compute the volume of the box?
Once the box is coated, what is the area remaining at the bottom of the box and what is the interior height of the box? Can you compute the volume given those two numbers?

The reason Subhotosh Khan said "This is a very ill-defined problem - does not make enough sense to be able to solve it!!" is that is not clear whether it is the overall, external, volume or the interior volume that is asked.
I would say that, since finding the external volume is just a simple application of one formula, it is the interior volume that is intended. That requires at least little thinking!

The given problem can be solved if following information is given,
- Out of the dimensions given, which is length? which is width? and which is height? (This information is important as top is removed)
- Is inner cavity volume or overall volume of container required?
