Mr. Dawson wants to hang his favorite 4 photos side-by-side on the wall in his living room. Which is the number of different ways the 4 photos could be arranged on the wall?

a. 8
b. 16
c. 24
d. 256

There are four choices for the first position.

After the first photo is hung, there are three choices remaining for the second position.

After the second photo is hung, there are two choices remaining for the third position.

After the third photo is hung, there is only one photo left for the fourth position.

4 * 3 * 2 * 1 = ?

We can count this way because multiplication is nothing more than repeated addition.

If you read my response above, then you will see that I came up with 4 * 3 * 2 * 1.

This equals 24, not 16.
