Word Problem Help????

Question was on my test I got it wrong: When a sample was surveyed on their prefrence fro yogurt flavor, 12 said vanilla and 8 said banana. The total group was 160. How many people were in the survey. I said 20

Second what is the probability that a person prefers vanilla? Answer is it 60% I said 12% and was wrong but I just figured it out again and came up with 60%.

Can someone help me with this it's driving me crazy.............
 
Ummm... Not a clue. If 60% is the right answer on the second one, 12/0.60 = 20, it seems 20 should be the right answer on the first one.

However, as I read the problem statement, I wondered immediately, "Were these the ONLY possible responses?" No one said "Mountain Berry" or "Key Lime Pie"? My initial response to the first question would have to be "20 <= Sample <= 160", with more information required to provide a more specific response.
 
Here is the question and answers I have to choose from:
1st : When a sample was surveyed on their preference for yogurt flavor, 12 said vanilla and 8 said banana. The total group was 160. How many people were in the survey? 12, -8, 20, 160
2nd: What is the probability that a person prefers vanilla?
Choices are: 12%, 60%, 40%, 100%

The test is over but I answered wrong and can't figure out how?
 
I'd go ask on the 1st. I don't get it.

You already gave way on the 2nd, right?
 
I can't ask I am doing work at home through one of the finish your high school from home books. There is no one to ask.
 
I don't understand the confusion. There were 160 people there but that is not relevent. They picked 12+8=20 people to ask which of two flavors they liked. 12/20=60% said vinilla.
To me the answers are 20 and 60%.
What am I missing?
