A parcel of land with an area of 24,000 square feet is to be divided into 3 lots. The first lot will take 2/3 of the parcel. The area of the second lot will be equal to the area of the third lot. Find the area of each lot.

P.S. I came up with 8,000 of square feet for each of the lots.

Please let me know if that is the correct answer.

Look at what the problem says: the first lot will take 2/3 of the parcel. That's over half of the parcel, isn't it? Then, it says that the areas of the second and third lots will be equal. So, you must have 1 large lot, and two smaller lots. That means your answer of 8000 ft<SUP>2</SUP> for each lot can't be right.

You could do this with algebra, but it is probably easier to do with plain old arithmetic. The first lot will take 2/3 of the parcel. Find 2/3 of 24000 ft<SUP>2</SUP>, and that will be the size of the first lot. Subtract the area of the first lot from 24000 ft<SUP>2</SUP>, and that will tell you what is left to be used for the remaining two lots. And those two lots are equal....can you find the size of each?

24000 = (2/3) 24000 + 2x where x is the size of the second and third parcel

24000 =16000 +2x

8000 = 2x

4000 = x

The first parcel is 16000 and the other two are 4000.
