Write the equation of the line with the x-intercept (4,0) and y-intercept (0,2).

I know the x's are the 4 and the second zero which means the y's are the first zero and the 2. is the equation x=4+0 over 0+2?

I'm not exactly sure what you're saying here!!

But, you have two points on the line: (4, 0) and (0, 2)

You should be able to find the slope of this line using the fact that

slope = (y<SUB>2</SUB> - y<SUB>1</SUB>) / (x<SUB>2</SUB> - x<SUB>1</SUB>)

(x1, y1) = (4, 0)
(x2, y2) = (0, 2)

And the y-intercept for this line is where the line crosses the y-axis...isn't (0, 2) on the y-axis?

Once you know the value of m, the slope, and the y-intercept, b, you should be able to write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form,

y = mx + b

you know what is sad is when someone who knows this stuff is not sure what is being sasid , how is the student supose to know? I wrote it exactly as it is on the paper given to us from the teacher. Thank you for your help

MrsPi was not commenting on the statement of the problem ...

Write the equation of the line with the x-intercept (4,0) and y-intercept (0,2).

... the problem statement is very clear.

What she is unsure about was the poster's comments after the problem statement ...

I know the x's are the 4 and the second zero which means the y's are the first zero and the 2. is the equation x=4+0 over 0+2?

... this second sentence of this statement doesn't make sense.

The tutor wasn't questioning the exercise; it is quite clear. The tutor couldn't understand you.

Are you not familiar with "slope" and the formula for finding it from two points?

I am not getting any hlep here
The very first reply gave you the formula, gave you the equation, told you how to find the slope m, and pointed out what the y-intercept b was. At the very least, the concept of "slope" should have sounded vaguely familiar.

If you are so lost as to regard this step-by-step assistance as "not getting any hlep", then I'm afraid you need much more than we can offer within this environment. Please consider hiring a tutor and working, face to face, for a few hours a week (daily would be best) to try to get caught up to your class.

My best wishes to you.

would help if I had a teacher who could tell me things but I unlike other cannot afford anything let alone a tutor

So you're attempting to learn these things in a self-study manner...?

There are "dummies" books for algebra which might help; try your local library. But if you cannot afford books, classes, or tutoring, and are hoping that we can, for free, provide this for you, I'm afraid we are doomed to disappoint.

Online tutors can help students work through specific exercises, assuming the students have a basic grasp of the underlying material. But the volunteers here are not reasonably able to replace hours of classroom instruction. Sorry.

My best wishes to you.

Eliz.

those books for DUMMIES are of no help. YOu have had tohave some algebra classes to understand anything to do with algebra. No I am taking a so called online class which the teacher is not there the math books are a joke. the whole course is a joke. Believe me I would ;never learn algebra if I did not have to to get a degree

Why not? I'm not going to argue with you, but learning algebra is just recognizing patterns and applying principles. With the right teacher/class or textbook, learning algebra can be fun.

Don't think of it as a "subject" you need to graduate..think of it as a tool to help you better understand the world and everyday problems.

If you are truly "on your own", then a start would be bookmarking http://www.purplemath.com/modules/index.htm

Look for algebra tutorials there.

I have never liked any of the "Dummy" books either.
